IRS: According to the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 525: Taxable and Nontaxable Income, Rebates are Tax-free. The IRS states it specifically as follows: ''Cash rebates from a dealer or manufacturer for an item you buy'' is Nontaxable. The word manufacturer has been clarified to include ''auto (dealer)'' and ''home (broker)'' -- manufacturers of autos and homes, respectively.
